Question about using Tetracycline and Minocyclilne in fish tank.?
I heard thаt both Tetracycline аnd Minocycline degrade whеn exposed tο sunlight.
I wаѕ wondering hοw tο keep thе temperature οf mу betta’s tank frοm dropping іf im using tetracycline/minocycline.
аnу suggestions?
аlѕο, whісh οf thеѕе 2 antibiotics аrе best fοr treating fin rot аnd fungus?

You heard correctly. Most antibiotics will degrade under specific conditions, and heat and light are two of them. But if you read the label directions, most will tell you to add another dose the next day, and do a partial water change on the third day, then to add another dose. The companies who make these medications already know that they’ll degrade over time, so they make up for this with additional doses to keep the medicine at a theraputic level. So you don’t need to worry about temperature, just keep it where it’s normally set, just add the doses according to the instructions. You should also remove any carbon from your filter while you’re treating the fish. The carbon can remove the medicine if you leave it in. Just run the filter with the regular pads. If you have a cartridge that has carbon inside, you can cut it open and shake the carbon out.
Between the two choices, use Tetracycline. Minocycline affects more types of bacteria, some of which are good to have in the tank. Even though the Tetracycline acts against fewer types of bacteria, it’s effective against the bacteria that cause fin rot, Aeromonas and Pseudomonas. And yes, if you let your water quality go bad, the bacteria that cause these diseases can multiply, and the poor water conditions can weaken the immune system in your fish, so the two are related. But it’s the bacteria that cause fin rot.
Antibiotics don’t have to be made for use in aquariums, as long as they are soluble in water and not toxic to fish. What matters is that they’re effective against bacteria, whatever the environment where it’s found, including in the human body. Both are approved for human use. The only difference would be in the dose.
Why are you using Tetracycline and Minocyclilne in the tank? These are both antibacterials which are not designed for an aquarium. Because you read it somewhere on the net? Where did you get this and why are you treating your fish for fin rot? Fin rot is from POOR water. Try doing a 25% Water change each week and keeping the tank. Simply dumping these in the tank won’t cure anything especially if you are not dosing or using them correctly. Yes all antibiotics are affected by sunlight not to mention other factors. The antibiotics should not affect the temperatures of the tank in any way!
You should have a heater to keep the temperature constant in the tank no matter what the fish.Tetracycline is the best but if it isn’t bacterial you are wasting your time here. What are your water readings and how are you cleaning the tank? It may not be bacterial at all so now you are adding crap you do not need.
