Can I combine ampicillin and tetracycline?
I аm deciding οn mу undergraduate research, аnd I want tο test hοw well ampicillin аnd tetracycline kіll E. coli whеn combined compared tο hοw thеу work alone. If I wеrе tο gеt thе liquid form οf thеѕе antibiotics, сουld I mix thеѕе liquids without аnу chemical interactions?
According to the Handbook of Injectable Drugs, ampicillin and tetracycline are incompatible in the same solution.
not a good idea. Ampicillin is bactericidal (kills dividing organisms) and tetracycline is electrostatic.
Its recommended these 2 types aren’t mixed
Ignoring the chemical interactions question, I can tell you that it is a long term theory that mixing a bacteriostatic drug like tetracycline with a bacteriocidal ampicillin will actually make more of the bacteria survive.
