i was told by my pediatrician to just massage from the nose outwards. warm compresses can help too. he also told me that it can take quite a while to unclog it (a few months). also make sure it really is a clogged tear duct. my baby at 2 weeks had a discharge and it was conjunctivitis (a form of pink eye common in newborns) eyedrops cleared it up in less than a week.
my girl had a clogged duct at 2 weeks. i was told just to wipe it several times a day nose to ear with a warm cotton ball. And she showed me how to massage near the tear duct. i did this for two days and it cleared up
how ever iw as told if it didnt clear up or if the discharge got worse that i would have to go back for antibiotics.
i would do what your doctor said. perhaps your baby already reached that point?
We have been massaging my son’s clogged tear duct and using antibiotics. He was born with it, and 10 weeks later he still has the discharge. That mess is just so hard to clear up!
I would use the eye drops if that’s what the doctor said to do. Or if you wanted, you could try the other two methods for a few weeks and then if it does not clear up, you can use them along with the antibiotics.
My son had that too, it went switched eyes at 3 weeks and went away by 4 months. As long as the inner corner is not red or swollen (pink eye), it’s normal and you shouldn’t put anything on it. You may even see tears running out of it soon, indicating a fully blocked duct (as my son had) but again it’s normal.
My friend’s son had it to 12 months and the doctors started to talk about "popping" the duct with a needle, but it cleared up on it’s own.
MY MOTHER WAS A WHITE DRESS REGISTERED NURSE FOR
FORTY-YEARS; A LOT OF IT SHE WORKED IN PEDIATRICS AND THE INFANT CARE UNIT, SHE WOULD ADVISE YOU NEVER,
UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, USE A MEDICATION INTENDED FOR ADULT USAGE FOR TREATING AN INFANT; THINK CHILD
STRENGTH MEDICATIONS, I.E. CHILD ASPIRINS. DO NOT USE ERYTHROMYCIN OR ANYTHING REMOTELY SIMILAR ON ANY CHILD TWELVE MONTHS OF AGE OR LESS; THINK IN TERMS OF ADVERSE EFFECTS. LOOK AT THE INGREDIENTS LISTED ON THE PACKAGE OR ON AN INTERNET WEB-SITE!
My children had this and the dr gave me the drops as well. He told me though, that dripping a little breast milk into the eye a couple of times a day would help clear this up as well. I tried that first and it worked! It was about a week but I never had to put any medicine in their eyes
Just drop/spray some breast milk in the eyes and the discharge will be gone by tomorrow. My little boy had that as well.
Good luck!
