THE USUAL DOSAGE AND FREQUENCY OF ADMINISTRATION OF DOXYCYCLINE DIFFERS FROM THAT OF THE OTHER TETRACYCLINES. EXCEEDING THE RECOMMENDED DOSAGE MAY RESULT IN AN INCREASED INCIDENCE OF SIDE EFFECTS.
Adults: The usual dose of oral doxycycline is 200 mg on the first day of treatment (administered 100 mg every 12 hours) followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg/day. The maintenance dose may be administered as a single dose or as 50 mg every 12 hours.
In the management of more severe infections (particularly chronic infections of the urinary tract), 100 mg every 12 hours is recommended.
Side affects:
a life-threatening allergic reaction (symptoms are trouble breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; hives)
blood problems (symptoms are unusual bleeding or bruising)
liver damage (symptoms are yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, nausea ,vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain)
irritation of the esophagus
Other more common, but less serious, side effects include:
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
vaginal yeast infection
*I have recently recovered from an allergic reaction to antibiotics (correct dosage) and it is no fun…..lasted one month and I felt like I was dying.
depends on how much the overdose was… doxycycline is an antibiotic, so it’s not as big of a deal to overdose on as narcotics or other medications, but it could still lead to some adverse effects if it was a really high dose. Here’s some more info…
