Assuming you have access to the internet, you may want to just type "side effects of doxycycline hyclate" in the search bar. That would be the best way of finding out all the side effects of the drug your child will be taking. I use it in the hospital all the time. There are too many side effects to list here. Now of course, that doesn’t mean, your son will experience those side effects. But… you shouldn’t want to take a chance on any information being left out, by asking someone on Yahoo Answers. So just refer to an online source for the best information.
More common side effects may include:
Angioedema (chest pain; swelling of face, around lips, tongue and throat, arms and legs; difficulty swallowing), bulging foreheads in infants, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, discolored teeth in infants and children (more common during long-term use of tetracycline), inflammation of the tongue, loss of appetite, nausea, rash, rectal or genital itching, severe allergic reaction (hives, itching, and swelling), skin sensitivity to light, vomiting.
If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to doxycycline or drugs of this type, you should not take Doxycycline hyclate. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions that you have experienced
Special warnings about Doxycycline hyclate
As with other antibiotics, treatment with doxycycline may result in a growth of bacteria that do not respond to Doxycycline hyclate and can cause a secondary infection. An overgrowth of certain bacteria in the colon could cause mild to severe–and rarely, life-threatening–diarrhea. If you develop this symptom, call your doctor immediately.
Bulging foreheads in infants and headaches in adults have occurred. These symptoms disappeared when doxycycline was discontinued.
You may become more sensitive to sunlight while taking doxycycline. Be careful if you are going out in the sun or using a sunlamp. If you develop a skin rash, notify your doctor immediately.
Birth control pills that contain estrogen may not be as effective while you are taking tetracycline drugs. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you should use another form of birth control while taking doxycycline.
Doxycycline syrup (Vibramycin) contains a sulfite that may cause allergic reactions in certain people. This reaction happens more frequently to people with asthma.
Possible food and drug interactions when taking Doxycycline hyclate
If doxycycline is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining doxycycline with the following:
Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, and iron-containing preparations such as Maalox, Mylanta, and others
Barbiturates such as phenobarbital
Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol)
Blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Oral contraceptives
Penicillin (V-Cillin K, Pen-vee K, others)
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Sodium bicarbonate

Adverse Reactions
Due to oral doxycycline’s virtually complete absorption, side effects of the lower bowel, particularly diarrhea, have been infrequent. The following adverse reactions have been observed in patients receiving tetracyclines:
Gastrointestinal: anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, glossitis, dysphagia, enterocolitis, and inflammatory lesions (with monilial overgrowth) in the anogenital region. Hepatotoxicity has been reported rarely. These reactions have been caused by both the oral and parenteral administration of tetracyclines. Rare instances of esophagitis and esophageal ulcerations have been reported in patients receiving capsule and tablet forms of the drugs in the tetracycline class. Most of these patients took medications immediately before going to bed. (See DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION).
Skin: maculopapular and erythematous rashes. Exfoliative dermatitis has been reported but is uncommon. Photosensitivity is discussed above. (See WARNINGS).
Renal toxicity: Rise in BUN has been reported and is apparently dose related. (See WARNINGS).
Hypersensitivity reactions: urticaria, angioneurotic edema, anaphylaxis, anaphylactoid purpura, serum sickness, pericarditis, and exacerbation of systemic lupus erythematosus.
Blood: Hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and eosinophilia have been reported.
Other: bulging fontanels in infants and intracranial hypertension in adults. (See PRECAUTIONS -General).
When given over prolonged periods, tetracyclines have been reported to produce brown-black microscopic discoloration of the thyroid gland. No abnormalities of thyroid function studies are known to occur.
I have been on Doxy for about a week. I had been having the worst bloating, stomach and groin pains and this morning I started feeling a shortness of breathe and pressure in my chest. I had no clue the last couple days what was wrong and had been searching everything. Nothing ever mentioned these side effects until I started reading people’s responses that had taken this drug. I have never taken the pill before I laid down and all I drink is water all day long. Never let your son take these pills and then lay down, he needs to stay vertical for an hour or so or he will burn his esophagus. I can’t wait to get off this medicine. I have never experienced this kind of pain in my stomach. It’s like a constant constipation with someone pushing in on my stomach even though I am not constipated.
