For medical experts please…Explain Doxycycline and should it be use to treat strep throat?
Mу fiancee hаѕ/mау hаνе strep throat. A doctor prescribed Doxycycline, аnd took a strep culture test, whісh mу fiancee won’t gеt thе results back fοr a couple days. I wаѕ thеn tοld bу trustworthy people thаt Doxycycline wаѕ overkill fοr a strep patient, especially ѕіnсе іt isn’t even known іf ѕhе hаѕ strep. I wουld lіkе professional medical input please. Whаt іѕ Doxycycline аnd ѕhουld іt bе used іn thіѕ instance?

Is your fiance allergic to penicillin? In that case, doctors need to give something that’s not in the penicillin family.
Pharyngitis can be caused by many things, but there are still ongoing debates about what is considered a pathogen and what isn’t. The facility where I work will say if Group A strep is growing, but if there is an organism that is prominent, and appears to be overtaking other flora, the lab will report that as well. Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae (both are bacterias) can also cause pharyngitis along with other types of beta streps. There are others as well.
The doctor she saw most likely wanted to cover all bases. Penicillins won’t work for all types of infection, so he wanted to give her something that would kill ANY organism that may be causing the problem.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic, but I do not know if it is commonly used for strep throat. If she questions the doctor’s opinions regarding treatment, your fiancee has the right to get a second opinion. It might also be helpful to ask this doctor to explain his/her decision to prescribe the doxycycline.
My friend had a std and they prescribed that same med for her. I looked on the yahoo health page and they tell you the specific meds names that are used to treat strep and that wasn’t one of them. Look it up for yourself.
Doxycycline is in the family of antibiotics called tetracyclines. It is used for a variety of reasons, from strep throat to other infectious processes. I have to ask why the doctor prescribed that? Is your fiancee allergic to penicillin? Or ask the doctor if he/she thinks that the bug is something needed to be eliminated by this drug choice. Treatment of choice for Strep is Amoxicillin, if resistant then with added with another drug called clavulinic acid, making brand name Augmentin. If patient is allergic to penicillin, then Erythromycin or Azithromycin can be given. I would ask the doctor if your fiancee has other type of infection. Good luck. I hope this helps.
