It is considered safe for long-term use. There are no indications of cancer or other long-term problems. It works by creating a very slight acid on the skin, killing bacteria that cause acne.
It’s manufactured by chemical synthesis. From benzoyl chloride with barium peroxide, if that helps, though the barium is recovered and not part of the final product.

I’ve been using a benzoyl peroxide cream for about a year now
It’s extremely effective. I used to get pimples on my forehead and now I don’t anymore and I’ve haven’t had any complications.
Well, I used to use Benzoyl Peroxide for years so ridicously it’s not even funny. The only problem I found with is is that it dries out your skin, so I guess if you are not using a really good moisturiser then it could damage your skin. This is because your facial skin is very delicate and it needs the hydration and if you take it out by using Benzoyl and you don’t replace it; then, you risk wearing your skin out leaving it more vulnerable to sun damage etc… and you may start getting premature wrinkles (it won’t be like and elderly person’s, but it’s still a warning).
So if you do plan on using it for a long period of time because it works really well for you, I advise you get an oil-free moisturiser contianing aloe vera (aloe vera heals dry skin in like a day). If you don’t have oily skin, then you can use a normal face lotion contain aloe vera, which doesn’t clog the pores.
