How can I dilute ProActiv medication with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide so that it has 2.0% benzoyl peroxide?
Ok, ѕο fοr mу science fаіr, I аm comparing effectiveness οf acne medication wіth benzoyl peroxide tο acne medication wіth salicylic acid. Unfortunately, thе benzoyl peroxide іn ProActiv іѕ 2.5% аnd thе salicylic acid іѕ 2.0%. I hаνе tο υѕе ProActiv bесаυѕе іtѕ mοѕt common. Sο, I’m going tο take out ѕοmе ProActiv, take out ѕοmе οf thе οthеr medication, аnd apply іt tο bacteria. Cаn someone please bе very specific аnd tеll mе exactly whаt I need tο dο tο dilute thе ProActiv medication ѕο thаt thе benzoyl peroxide іѕ аt 2.0%? Thanks ѕο much!

so say u got 1L of ur proactive (what u cutting it with anyway) 2.5 % is benzoyl peroxide. so that is 25mL of B. you only want 20 mL or 80% of original. so remove 200mL of proactive replace with what u cuttingit with (most likely distilled water) mix well
I don’t know what grade you’re in and how strict the teachers will be on experimental design, but that’s not a very good experiment. ProActiv has a lot of other ingredients other than BP that will affect your results including sulfer. In addition, you shouldn’t be comparing BP and SA on the same %. Different chemicals are SUPPOSED to work at different concentrations.
For a better experiment, you should do research to find the best concentration of BP and SA and use those 2 concentrations. Also, because the 2 work in such different ways (killing bacteria versus sloughing cells/purging pores) it’s going to be hard to compare because they work better for different kinds of acne. How are you going to measure anyway? With a small sample size, the results won’t be good at all since each person reacts different and heals differently.
If you really need to do this, add 1 part water to every 4 parts PA. So if you have 10g of PA, add in 2.5 g water. It’s a tad different if you want to do it by volume rather than by weight, but it’ll be close enough.
Divide 2.5% by 2%. This gives you 1.25. You need to dilute the 2.5% proactive at a 1 to 1.25 ratio. For example, that means take 1 mL of the 2.5% proactive and add 0.25 mL of inactive ingredients (some kind of lotion maybe??) so that the total volume is 1.25 mL. Now your solution will be 2%. Just make sure that whatever you pick for your inactive ingredients to dilute the proactiv doesn’t have any effect itself on the bacteria. Good luck!
