Your doctor will probably make you try other medications first, but.. Accutane is a drug (isotretinoin) that treats pretty much all the symptoms/causes of acne.
There are a LOT of side effects–most of which are rare–but some of which, basically everyone gets.
Accutane will dry out your skin. Like crazy. You’ll have to use lip-balm (like Aquaphor) non-stop while you’re on it. Your muscles will be more sore after you work out. Your face will get redder for awhile. Your acne may get worse, initially.
You’ll need monthly blood tests to make sure it isn’t destroying your liver. If you’re a woman, you have to agree to use two forms of birth control and call a 1-800 number every month to answer questions about your sex life.
Accutane is a "miracle drug," but it’s highly controlled because it causes birth defects, possible liver damage and a slew of other rare, but serious side effects.
