What does insurance cover regarding accutane?
I аm considering seeing a derm bесаυѕе i hаνе dаrk purplish scars οn mу face frοm acne. If уου feel thе surface οf mу skin аnd face іt’s very smooth! Underneath іѕ whеrе mу scaring іѕ. I hаtе іt. Until I wаѕ 21 I hаd perfect skin everyone wаѕ super envious οf. It’s bееn 6 years οf dealing wіth іt аnd mу birth controls (various kinds even those mаdе fοr people wіth acne) seem tο nοt dο anything! Sο, dοеѕ insurance cover accutane? (PPO). аnd іf nοt, whаt аrе ѕοmе οthеr options thаt саn take іt away? I’m getting married іn March οf 2007 аnd want flawless skin! Bυt I don’t know іf I саn afford accutane w/out insurance. Hοw much dοеѕ іt cost? Okay, enough οf mу 20 qυеѕtіοnѕ!
Thanks fοr аnу hеlр!! I’ve tried аll thе peels, washes, etc bу thе way…washing morning аnd night.

I work in the medical field, I know that even PPO’s do not cover the cost of Accutane. This is because treatment of acne is what insurance companies consider "cosemetic" and as we all know cosemetic procedures are not covered by insurance companies because they are NOT life threatening.
Accutane-from what I’ve seen can set you back 100′s of dollars for just ONE tube of it.
And for your last question, I’ve always had horrible acne, but I went to my physician a few years ago and he prescribed a medication called "MINOCYCLINE" (AKA TETRACYCLINE) It’s worked wonders for my skin, it’s a capsule 500mg taken twice daily. I’ll warn you-my first month I had some stomach pain, but in the end it was worth it. As your Dr. about the above medication. Also note, MINOCYCLINE is a generic form of TETRACYCLINE (meaning, minocycline is covered under all insurance’s, even HMO’s while TETRACYCLINE is not)
Hope this helps!

I’m on accutane right now, and I know for a fact that it is extremely expensive. Hoever, it is covered by my insurance (united healthcare) becuase I have a Health Savings Account which I’ve already maxed out on other things. Consult your insurance company and make an appointement with a dermotologist for details. What you have sounds like cystic acne, which does leave scars, and unfortunatley there is no topical treatment for that. Accutane is your best bet if you want "flawless" skin, but keep in mind it also only works for about 80% of the people who use it.
I took accutane and my Blue Cross/Blue Shield Covered it; however, you should probably check with your insurance co to be sure. It usually falls under your Rx coverage.
They have generic accutane now. Most insurance will cover it, since acne is considered a medical condition not cosmetic. Accutane is a pain though because you have to go for pregnancy tests every month and jump through hoops to get your RX filled, and use two forms of BC. But it does work wonders for a lot of people. If your face is just purple from scars and you no longer have actual acne though, accutane will not help. It doesn’t get rid of the scars. For that you should see a derm or cosmetic surgeon for either microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing, but neither of those are covered by insurance and cost $$$$!
