No. It is not an absolute requirement to take birth control while on Accutane.
As long as you pledge to remain abstinent throughout your course of Accutane and a certain amount of time afterwards, that will serve as your choice for birth control. When you go to the iPledge site, you will select abstinence as your first form and "none" as your second; just make sure your dermatologist is aware of your choice.
I believe it says that you need to use 2 methods of birth control while on Accutane. So basically, yes, it’s an absolute requirement, due to the severe birth defects it can cause. You need to see a gynecologist to get the prescription for birth control and to get checked out anyway if you are sexually active. You also need to use condoms. Before they give you the medication there is a lot of reading and agreements to use birth control that are required on your part.
Accutane is one scary drug!
