I think your doctor/dermatologist will want to try you on other treatments before trying Accutane. It is usually dubbed the "worst case scenario". The doctor will try you on antibiotics, creams and possibly contraceptive pills before considering Accutane.
Tetracycline took me about a month to see some sort of results, but when i went off them the bloody acne came back, so in the end the doctor practically begged me to take Accutane so i would quit coming to him and complaining.
If you can get your hands on it, it is a wonderful drug, annoying side effects in regards to dryness and sensitive skin but amazing for acne.

It's not so much how long you need to be off of the tetracycline before beginning the accutane. The real question is how long you need to be on the tetracycline in order to be sure that it's not the best drug for you, before beginning on Accutane. As a rule, I will at least give tetracycline a 6 week trial in order to see any results, before I go to either a stronger antibiotic or to Accutane. Remember, Accutane is reserved for people with bad, cystic acne, or for people who do not respond to standard antibiotic regimens. Good luck.
